On any given weekend in Los Angeles you will find volunteers from Animal Advocates Alliance (AAA) holding an adoption event.
AAA goes to shelters and pulls dogs and cats from “death row” and helps them find their forever homes. This weekend I was volunteering at an event in Malibu, helping a friend find a new canine companion. His heart had settled on an adorable pug-chow mix, but before signing the paperwork, he wanted this new member of his family to meet some of his closest friends. Maria Shriver and the entire First Family of California arrived in minutes and were officially introduced to this sweet dog (now named Bohdi). I later learned that the First Lady had strongly encouraged my friend to adopt a shelter dog. With many celebrities toting pint-sized, over-bred accessories, it was truly a breath of fresh air to witness the first family in support of pet adoption.
Bohdi’s story has a happy ending but many others do not. The Humane Society estimates that 3-4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year in this country. Adopt from your local animal shelter and save a life.
